HOMECARE BUYING GUIDE 2
Choosing a homecare bed in Ireland
A practical guide to profiling functions, sizes, height ranges, room planning and the Meditec beds suited to different homecare needs.
For individuals, families and carers across Ireland
Clinical note: Bed choice, mattress, side rails and accessories should reflect an individual assessment. Ask a relevant healthcare professional to review clinical needs before purchase or rental.
A DECISION IN FIVE STEPS
Start with needs—not a model number
A useful shortlist begins with the person and the room. Work through these questions before comparing specifications.
Start with the person
Consider mobility, transfers, time spent in bed, who provides care and whether needs may change.
Choose the functions
Decide whether electric backrest, knee-break and height adjustment would support daily routines.
Confirm size and capacity
Check mattress platform size, maximum user weight and the bed’s full external dimensions.
Plan the room
Measure access routes and leave space for care, transfers, equipment, sockets and safe movement.
Plan the full setup
Match the mattress and assess rails, bumpers, lifting poles, levers or overbed tables separately.
FUNCTIONS EXPLAINED
What should the bed adjust?
“Profiling” describes movement in the sleeping platform. Different functions can support comfort, care routines and positioning, but they do not replace a care assessment.
Backrest profiling
Raises the upper body from a lying position.
Height adjustment
Lowers the platform for access and raises it to a more practical level for care.
Knee-break and legrest
Profiles the leg section and can help maintain a supported position.
Key-lock handset
Allows selected controls to be restricted where appropriate, depending on the bed model.

Homecare bed FAQs
A profiling bed uses powered sections to adjust the backrest and leg area. Height-adjustable models can also raise or lower the mattress platform. Exact movements and ranges vary by model.
The mattress must fit the platform and be suitable for both the bed mechanism and the person’s assessed needs. Confirm compatibility, dimensions and pressure-care requirements before ordering.
No. Rails and bumpers need an individual risk assessment, including entrapment, climbing and transfer considerations. Check compatibility with the bed and mattress.
Use the bed’s external not mattress dimensions. Also allow working space for care, transfers and equipment, and confirm doorways, corridors, stairs, lifts and the delivery route.
Rental can suit short-term, trial or changing situations; purchase may suit established longer-term needs. Compare the model available, mattress and accessories included, delivery, setup, servicing and collection terms.
Delivery and setup depend on the product and location. Discuss room access, stairs, parking, lead time, installation, demonstration and removal of packaging with the Meditec team before ordering.
